Solange Style: Are Juxtaposition Photos the New Thing

What happens when you get a group of friends staggering about in random fabrics and prints in one big photo? Chic happens, that’s what. This type of posing is a blend between Sex and the city marriage scene (notice the hard contrast) and Solange’s famous wedding photo (regarding their poses) very spacey, but yet uniform.

Location: Viceroy Hotel, Santa Monica California

Try it at your next girlfriend gathering! You just kind of stagger about into a position and pose. Also, try not to be so matchy matchy. Remember hard contrast. Keep Jux!

Get My Look: What To Wear to a Day Meeting in Los Angeles on a Weekend

One may be overwhelmed with anxiety on what to wear to a meeting on the weekend in perhaps one of the most trendiest cities around, Los Angeles. No fret, your friendly stylist is here to help. oh, I almost forgot, I also have the sweetest secret on how you can save a little, but still say a lot with the perfect purchase. hint: The dress I’m wearing

Black Basics

Remember it’s almost always in the details. A plain nice A-Line dress similar to the one pictured above will do the trick. If you look closely there is only one detail on the vest like dress which is a golden clasp. The dress mainly stands out because of its perfected lines. Assembling a deep V plunge, but not to deep where it is still considered modest and classy. The band around the waist accentuates the mid section without overly hugging the curves. Designer Calvin Klein did well to create an illusion of a split by dividing the pieces. The diagonal cross front adds attitude, interest, and style. However, for this occasion the most important thing about this dress is the length.  Short enough to enjoy the day, long enough to say professional.  This dress is a great go to for many occasions. You can even add a nice sleeve underneath or wear it unzipped and open as a vest over your other two piece ensembles. (ex. Pants and shirt, skirt and blouse)

The Big Secret: This dress was originally 140.00 USD, but I was able to snag it for 30.00 in my local Ross Department store. I’m not much of thrifty, but I do love a nice department roam from time to time. It’s usually a hit and miss, but when it’s a hit it’s a really big one!

Designer: Calvin Klein

I would love to give more details about the dress, but since I bought it “out of season” I’m unable to provided much more.

The details:

I paired the dress with this season’s Gucci Slides and sling bag with a Guess watch. All Accessories have a hint of gold which in my case worked really well sense the dress is null in color and in prints. However I wore silver hoops to play off of the subtlety of the white. This is just one way you can style it. Heels and a handle bag would work just the same, but on the weekend during brunch hours I wanted to keep comfort in mind. Not to forget La’s Parking.

Three Things to Remember when buying your dress:

  1. Lines
  2. Length
  3. Quality (Better to buy out of season quality then spend on flimsy fabrics)

Teaser Alert: The Desert Collection by Cartamebii Private Viewing and What to Expect This Season

Don’t you just love it when it’s a good day and things go accordingly? Well, yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting with decor designer and owner of Cartamebii designs, Tamara Lipscomb. Swept away by her brush stroke collection last winter which featured bright saturated primes blended to perfection on pillows, clocks, and many other fixtures. So attracted to her hand sculpts and beautiful eye for design, I assured her that as soon as I moved into my new home her pieces would be eagerly requested.

You know, to add a little designers twist. Fancy my pansy shall we. Sips tea, raises pinky.

Well the time has come, I’m moving and she has a new collection on the brink! Yesterday, she invited me to a private viewing to see what I liked and to share with my viewers of my blog. I know, super exciting!  Here’s a teaser of what to expect:

70 Positive Affirmations To Stay Light on Your Feet and Light in Your Heart

Thanks to our lovely sister site, Happy Black Woman, we are able to walk boldly into the day, releasing all that weighs heavy.

Affirmations are positive statements that paint a mental picture of how you want your life to be. They can be applied to any life situation where you’re struggling: relationships, finances, career, health, purpose… and most powerfully, self-love.

positive-blogging-300x300

With the hustle and bustle of everyday life your most delicate and inner personal needs can easily get swept beneath the rug which spirals into a whole negative vortex, knowingly by our actions or unknowingly by our results. If you believe that  you are what you say you are then you know the power of words and their fundamental success when applied with affirmations. Affirmations are proven methods of self-improvement because of their ability to rewire our brains, much like exercise. In the sequence of thought-speech-action, affirmations play an integral role by breaking patterns of negative thoughts, negative speech, and, in turn, negative actions.

According to Dr. Terry Wahls who healed her Progressive MS with a nutrient dense diet that she specifically designed for her mitochondria and her brain, we should be eating 6-9 cups of leafy greens and colorful vegetables per day. Per DAY. The largest part of our diet should be vegetables. Many people don’t eat 6-9 servings of vegetables in a week.

_DSC1855

In fact, here’s a visual of what most American’s yearly diets look like. And don’t let the vegetable category fool you. The most highly consumed vegetables among most Americans are corn and potatoes, which are actually considered a starch, not a vegetable.

Dr. Wahls was diagnosed with MS in 2000, by 2003 she was at stage 2 on heavy duty drugs including chemotherapy to fight the MS. The medications and therapy didn’t help and she continued to get worse. Slowly, each night after seeing patients all day, she began to…

I Am Not My Hair: 8 Signs You’re Ready for the Big Chop

So you’ve been talking to yourself in the mirror again, complaining to your girlfriends about your “sudden” heat damage, and nearly never wear your real hair anymore. I would even guess you’ve been through a million youtube channels which follows someone’s natural hair journey, right? If this sounds even the slightest bit true, you’re not alone. You’re simply treading that thin line of the natural hair phenomena. According to an article published by Madame Noir, “The hair-care company, Design Essentials, started a study in 2010 to measure the popularity of natural hair. While the number of women who ditched relaxed hair was 26 percent in 2010, it has jumped up big time with a 10 percent increase hitting 36 percent for 2011. Now we can only imagine what those numbers have reached now, three years later. According to USA Today and Mintel, a consumer spending and market research firm, relaxer kit sales have also dropped by nearly 17 percent since 2006.”  “Natural hair has been a movement for several years. What we’re seeing now is a confirmation that this is a lifestyle that is very important to a lot of women,” says Cyntelia Abrams, a marketing coordinator for Design Essentials. So ladies your temptation is nothing more than an on going natural hair revolution. Of course there is always the transitioning option(i.e., gradually growing out your perm) instead of the big chop. That preference solely depends on the woman, but if our opinion matters we say go for the BIG Chop! Cut it all off because then will you be able to truly experience the Euphoric feeling many women discuss along their journey.

Though this is probably quite inspiring,  most women don’t just arrive at the big Chop. They are met with signs.

Eight Signs you are Ready for the BIG CHOP:

anna diop
Actress/Model Anna Diop

1. You are always complaining about your real hair– A lot of people tend to reminisce on the way their hair “use to be.” They are always comparing the state of their hair now to the past. Huge sign it’s time to let the past go and start anew.

2. You’re hair is dry, brittle, and suffers from breakage– So many years of heat damage and chemicals your hair just doesn’t seem like it can revive itself. Unfortunately, it’s sort of kind of dead.

3. You admire women who have done the transition or Big Chop. You’re curious about their journey. You ask a lot of questions.

4. Getting a perm no longer sounds appealing to you. After learning the effects of the creamy Crack it’s hard for you to continue the routine.

5. You wear extensions, braids, wigs, etc more than your real hair and not for protective reasons.

6. You’ve been youtubing and googling natural hair journeys. Taking the time to research an idea is a pretty good sign you’re about to possibly embark on something new.

7. You’re fed up with something, largely society and itch for freedom. You just want to be you!

8. You’re Afraid– Fear is a great indicator and a chance to arise to a conscious challenge occurring in the spirit.

I personally did the BC last year, January 2014, and I can testify to the spiritual elevation that took place. My best girlfriend comforted me on the phone while I wined and joked about just cutting it all off. She said two words, “Do It.” Before I knew it the little black noodle strands toppled from every which direction, and there my real hair was, tied inside like a bed of bad lies. Once the weave had been detached from the little hair that was left, I stood in complete awe as tears begin to fall from my eyes. For the first time, I felt free from society impositions of beauty, liberated, and beautiful. No where to hide, but in my truth.

So from one girlfriend to another “DO IT.” You owe it to yourself to grow in your truth to reveal and cultivate your definition of beauty.

Good Luck

Three Vegan Treats That Will Make You Go Bananas!

If you’re like most veggie shoppers, a nice bundle of bananas to adorn the tops of your kitchen counters and fridge is almost an absolute must after every grocery run. Like seriously, what’s a morning without a banana? If you love bananas in your morning smoothie or cinnamon oatmeal, then you are bound to love this article! We’ve found not one, but three ways to bring the yellow peels into your bedroom after 6pm, guilt free! Shhhh….

  1. Peanut Butter Banana ice cream

peanut butter

While technically this treat isn’t ice cream, the finish creamy consistency allows it to compete regardless of the specifics.  All you need is

rep Time: 3 minutes
Cook Time: 2 hours
Total Time: 2 hours 3 minutes

Servings: 1-2

Ingredients:
2 ripe bananas
2 tablespoons peanut butter
Optional: 2 tablespoons almond or soy milk

Directions:

1. Select two ripe bananas. Note: brown-ish bananas are totally acceptable for this recipe.

Slice the bananas into small pieces.

freeze overnight

4. Once the bananas are frozen, blend them with the peanut butter in a blender or food processor until the texture is smooth and creamy.

Here, you have the option to add almond or soy milk if you prefer a creamier consistency. Don’t panic if you don’t own a blender; mashing the mixture with a fork will do.

5. Pour contents into a bowl, add desired toppings (recommendations include shredded coconut, cacao nibs, honey, and berries), and enjoy.

Note that this ice cream is served as “soft-serve consistency,” so for those who prefer more firm ice cream, stick the contents back into the freezer until hardened.

2. Banana Bread

bread1final-1024x678.jpg

It’s gluten-free, whole grain and has no refined sugar, and, most importantly, it’s delicious. All you need is

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 1 hour and 10 minutes

Servings: 8

Ingredients:
2 ½ cups brown rice flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon sea salt
½ teaspoon cinnamon
2 flax eggs, beaten
6 ripe bananas, mashed
¼ cup maple syrup (or to taste)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ cup melted coconut oil (or olive/walnut/canola oil)
½ cup chocolate chips

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350ºF and line a loaf pan with parchment paper (or grease with coconut oil, though I find parchment works much better).
2. In a large bowl, combine brown rice flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and cinnamon.
3. In a separate bowl, mash banana with a fork (or, if you’re like me and like saving time, use your hands). Mix in eggs, oil, maple syrup and vanilla.
4. Combine wet and dry mixtures, making sure to stir out big chunks of banana.
5. Fold in chocolate chips.

6. Pour batter into pan, top with more chocolate chips, and bake for an hour or until set and golden brown on top.
7. Enjoy plain, topped with nut butter, or with a dollop of ricotta and a drizzle of honey.

3.Chocolate Covered Bananas

banana.jpg

I know you’re thinking it’s getting pretty dangerous in this place, but oh boy will your sweet buds thank you later! All you need is

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes

Servings: 4

Ingredients:

2 bananas
3 tablespoons almond milk
1 6-oz. bag chocolate chips (whatever kind you want)

Directions:

1. Peel the bananas and cut them in half, width wise.

2. Place the chocolate and almond milk in a pot and melt on the stove.

3. Using either toothpicks or popscicle sticks, dip the bananas in chocolate. This part gets messy, so use a spoon to help you.

4. Place the dipped bananas on a plate, and put in the fridge for at least three hours.

Enjoy!

Are You A Starving Artist Looking For A Free and Loving Thanksgiving Meal?

It’s been an ongoing subtle cliché that the city of Los Angeles is home of the starving artist. Though there are chuckles and giggles and depending with whom you are having the conversation with, maybe even a bit of depression exchanged, it’s an agonizing truth for many. So to help cheer and fill up the starving artist for a day we’ve provided two loving  and well respected avenues for the aspiring starrah to enjoy a free meal for the Holiday. Although we’ve decided to showcase two locations, keeping in mind the artists need of joy, laughter, and a certain demand of health for the big screen or stage, there are multiple locations doing a good deed this Thanksgiving. Try cbs.com for more options.
